built in the 15th century by the Order of the Knights of St. John, who at the beginning of the 13th century had a command center on the nearby island of Rhodes, and here they also took control of the city. An interesting fact is that the construction of the castle was made of stone blocks, often with friezes, from pagan temples. To this day, the striking pieces of walls with reliefs that do not refer to monastic coats of arms can still be seen. The place has gone through difficult times throughout its history. It was a place of ordeal for thousands of prisoners during the ceasefire of the Italian occupation. Today, after the 2017 earthquake, the monument is closed to visitors. Let's hope that it will open soon, as there are many valuable monuments from ancient times on its premises.

Tree of Hippocrates

The famous physician was born in Kos in 460 B.C.E. He carried out many reforms, introduced concepts and principles that are still followed today. According to legend, the famous tree growing in the heart of the city is the one that was planted 2,500 years ago by the sage. He taught here because it is known that during his lifetime he had many followers and disciples. Apart from how authentic the tree is, according to scientists it is at least 600 years old, and according to tourists it is an interesting place. There are interesting monuments here; a mosque with a fountain where you need to clean before entering the holy place (it was badly damaged during the 2017 earthquake), the entrance to the closed Fort of the Knights Hospitaller and an atmospheric restaurant where you can listen to live music every evening.

that is, a musical theater, was created during the reign of Antonius Pirus on the island in 137 ÷ 161 CE. Although damaged in the earthquake in 142 CE, it looks very good today. The semicircular auditorium with rows of seats is well preserved, tunnels are eagerly visited, where today there is nothing, but once filled with shops and statues. one of the most important is the imposing figure of Hippocrates, which is housed in the Archaeological Museum. Right next to the Odeon, there is a floor moved from here to be able to admire it from above. Various important cultural events still take place here on the island of Kos.

Archaeological Museum

From the outside, the building does not arouse interest. It was established in 1934 when Kos was under Italian occupation. Thus, the style of the building resembles fascist monumentality. The interior, however, is very visitor-friendly. A beautiful mosaic floor, statues referring to ancient times, among which it is worth paying attention to Asclepius, the mythological guardian of the island of Kos. An interesting statue and pride of the museum is a large figure of Hippocrates, a scientist who was born here, who is the pride of Kos, and who also discovered a new face of medicine.

it is located quite a distance from the Agora and the port. This proves that the ancient city of Kos was very large and therefore important and massively inhabited. In archeology, Gymnasion is a place of sports training and subsequent games. The fact that it is situated opposite the odeon, that is, the musical theater, proves that in those days sport, that is, exercising the body, was as important as culture, that is, something for the soul. The monuments preserved here are available free of charge, but authentic. What may surprise you is the expensive, uninteresting building that hides ... a public toilet - once very exclusive and mosaic floor tiles...

Casa Romana

that is, the home of probably important and wealthy burghers from Roman times. Although the building is not authentic, it is a showcase of the capital of the island of Kos. All this because it shows what the flat looked like, actually the estate, which determined the choice of the place of residence, its layout and hierarchy of rooms and decorations. These are authentic mosaics and wall frescoes, which once proved the wealth of the inhabitants. Before entering the monument, it is worth paying attention to the remains of columns and figures...

that is, a public place where there were temples, public buildings, a meeting place and the announcement of important information. It was discovered during the cleaning of the city after the debris caused by the earthquake in 1933. An accidental tourist will not be delighted with the place, because almost everything protrudes from the ground level, actually two restored columns with a horizontal connecting beam and a few elements lying on the ground with a description on the board...
