From January 2018. changes were introduced in the public transport tickets in Athens (they are rigid and coded) and the way they were purchased. Tickets can be bought at:
ticket machines - after leaving the airport you have to go to the right or at every metro station. There are also several kiosks, e.g. on Syntagma Square, at the X95 stop.
in the window at the metro station - but there are very long queues, because the Athenians buy monthly tickets there - and it takes a long time, so the queue moves very slowly.
In general, be patient. It is not worth going free-riding, because although it has not happened before in Athens at all, recently you can come across control. The penalties are very high.
Before arriving, it's also worth checking to see if there will be a strike. The strike can involved public transport buses and the metro. Taxis charged very high prices for traveling to the center that days. Only trains went to the city, before each of the arriving people realized the situation, a lot of time passed and in the meantime he bought a bus ticket, then a subway, finally got on a train or a taxi.

To improve public transport in Athens, in 1904 the first metro line was opened. The construction of the metro in Athens began with a pilot tunnel, starting from the Acropolis station. From here, a tunnel was built about 300 meters north and south. Very soon machines came across various ancient wells and cisterns. All this fell into a hollow canal, causing great difficulties in the further development of the metro in Athens. It turned out that useless objects were thrown away in this place in ancient times. Many pots were found, whole or broken, animal skeletal systems, fragments of sculptures and architectural elements, pieces of oil lamps and even shells. The Greeks know very well how great the remains of antiquity are, which is why they spared no time to collect and catalog all the finds. Today, Athens has 3 metro lines, which greatly improve travel around the Greek capital. Athens metro stations are very modern. Ticket prices may not be the lowest, but multi-day tickets give a lot of savings.
