Industrial Chalcis

The New Archaeological Museum, the Arethusa Spring and the Kamares Aqueduct are located in the industrial area of the capital of Euboea.

The city's ring road causes heavy traffic from large vehicles and the air is heavy with exhaust fumes.

Between 1850 and 1938, large-scale enterprises were established here, including tanneries and wineries. A former soap factory and oil mill were built in 1921 on a vast 16-acre site.

The factories ceased their operations here in 1962.

Industrial buildings that once played a significant role in the city's development and character now lie in ruins. They are also the last vestige of the city's image from the previous century, which has now lost most of its monuments and historical references.

The remains of the factories are two-story buildings with a rectangular plan, arranged around the perimeter of the plot, creating an internal courtyard.

The buildings are built of stone and here and there brick.

Most buildings have no roofs. The surviving fragments indicate they were wooden or sheet metal, with single-pitched roofs.

Large window openings with impressive arched finishes have been preserved.

From a distance, a 33-meter-high chimney dominates the view, located in the southern part of the plot.

After enormous efforts, two buildings were not demolished and since 2012, together with the chimney, have been classified as "to be preserved".

A project was created to transform the complex into a living exhibition, i.e. to restore the objects to their original form.
